Born 11 November 1154 Coimbra
Died 26 March 1212 Coimbra

Dulcia of Barcelona
Born after 1152
Died 1 September 1198 Coimbra
Sancho was an experienced warrior against the Moors and, after
1185 when he
succeeded his father as King of Portugal, continued his
efforts against
them. However, in 1192 he signed a truce which allowed
him the opportunity
to repair old city walls and build new cities,
which earned
him the nickname of 'the City Builder'.
The latter part of his reign was taken up with ecclesiastical
disputes with
the Portugese bishops supported by Pope Innocent III.
The disagreements
were mainly over church revenues but he was also
accused by the
Bishop of Coimbra of giving refuge to a witch in his
palace. The
king then imprisoned the Bishop of Oporto but he escaped
five months
later and fled to Rome. As a result, Portugal was placed
under a papal
interdict which was lifted in 1210, when Sancho
submitted, allowing
the Bishop of Oporto to return and pay the Pope
one hundred
marks in gold.
