He was his father's fourth son borne by his father's second wife. As
his elder brothers had died, he became 5th Earl of Bridgwater in 1701.
He served at Court as Gentleman of the Bedchamber 1703-1705 to George,
Prince of Denmark, and then as his Master of the Horse 1705-1708; Lord
Chamberlain to the Princess of Wales 1714-1717; Lord of the Bedchamber
to the king 1719-1727. On 18 June 1720 he was created Marquess of Brackley
and Duke of Bridgwater.
His first wife was Lady Elizabeth Churchill, daughter of the celebrated
Duke of Marlborough, but she died of smallpox aged twenty-six. Eight years
later he married Lady Rachel Russell, daughter of the Duke of Bedford.
He died 11 January 1745, aged sixty-three, and his widow then married,
14 December 1745, Sir Richard Lyttelton who died in 1770, while Lady Rachel
survived until she died on 22 May 1777.
