In the summer of 1590 he was imprisoned for his zeal in the cause of
his religion. In 1588 he subscribed one hundred pounds towards repelling
the Spanish Armada. He was known as "the Valiant" and served with the Imperial
army against the Turks.
Having taken a standard from the enemy at Gran, in Hungary, the Emperor
created him a Count of the Holy Roman Empire. This was done at Prague on
14 December 1595 and stated that the honour was conferred upon "you, Thomas
Arundell, and all and every of your children, heirs and legitimate descendants
of both sexes already born, or that ever
thereafter shall be", thus including his legitimate posterity of either
sex forever. Although any such precedence in England was never acknowledged
by Queen Elizabeth I it was by King James I. In 1598 Arundell succeeded
to his father's properties and on 4 May 1605 was created Baron Arundell
of Wardour. He married twice and fathered ten children.
