As a devoted royalist he raised a regiment of horses for the king.
His wife, Blanche, daughter of the Earl of Worcester, gallantly defended
Wardour Castle against the parliamentary forces under Sir Edward Hungerford.
She was finally forced to surrender but on honourable terms. However, these
were not observed; the castle was sacked and Lady Arundell removed to Dorchester
as a prisoner. Lord Arundell was at the battle of Stratton where, on 16
May 1643, he was fatally wounded and died at Oxford on 19 May 1643. His
widow survived until 28 October 1649 when she died at Winchester.
