In 1559 he returned from military service in France and was accepted as 13th Chief of his clan. His cousin, Ian Dubh, the unpopular 12th Chief, who was not supported by the clan, was forced to flee to Ireland and was murdered by the O'Donnells. Tormod was a supporter of Mary, Queen of Scots.
