He was only a minor when he became Duke of Savoy with his mother
acting as his Regent. As she pursued a pro-French policy, she also
found him a French bride, Anne Marie d'Orleans, niece of Louis XIV
of
France and granddaughter of King Charles I of England.
In 1690, on the renewal of the continental wars, he joined Austria
and Spain against the French, but signed a peace with the French that
was favourable for him. In the War of the Spanish Succession he
started on the French side but in 1703 changed to the Habsburg side,
extracting the title of King of Sicily which was then exchanged for
that of King of Sardinia in 1720. In 1730 he abdicated in favour of
his son but, when he changed his mind in 1731 and attempted to resume
the throne, his son had him arrested and confined for the remainder
of
his years.
