In 1630 when he succeeded his father, Savoye was occupied by the French. However, being married to a French princess assisted him with an alliance with France and the partial return of his Duchy. In 1631at the Treaty of Cherasco, he obtained one-third of Montferrat while at the same time he being forced to cede the Piedmontese fortress of
Pinerolo to France. As a Duke he was wise and popular; but as he died leaving a child, his son Carlo Emanuele, as heir, it was his widow who became Regent of Savoy.
