and Infanta Maria Antoinetta of Spain

Archduchess Maria Theresia of Austria-Este

Raised in a very religious, almost ascetic, household, his principal
tutors were Cavaliere Papacino d'Antoni and the Barnabite father, Giacinto
Gerdil, later a Cardinal. As a young man he was given
the title of Duke of Aosta.
On 25 April 1789 he married Archduchess Maria Theresia of Austria and
they became the parents of seven children; of whom four daughters survived
to adulthood. On 4 June 1802 his brother, Carlo Emanuele, King of Sardinia,
abdicated and Vittorio Emanuele became Vittorio Emanuele IV-I, King of
Sardinia.
After the fall of Napoleon Bonaparte, the family's Italian mainland
properties were restored to him. On 6 October 1819, when his elder brother,
Carlo Emanuele, died, he was accepted as the Jacobite
heir to the thrones of England and Scotland.
On 13 March 1821 he abdicated from the throne of Sardinia in favour
of his youngest brother, Carlo Felice, but retained his British rights.
In June 1822 he retired to the castle of Moncalieri near
Torino and, on 10 January 1824, died there and was buried in the Basilica
of Superga near Torino.
