At the age of nineteen he went into the service of the East India Company and, in 1736, was appointed Governor of Ceylon. In 1740 he became Governor General of the Dutch East Indies and this he remained until he died in Batavia on 1 November 1750. In 1743 the Princess of Boni gave him a slave by whom he fathered several children. He bought
her freedom and she was baptised as Helena Pieters. In his will he acknowledged and legalised his children, which was acknowledged by the Dutch Government and, as a result, his son Jan Willem married into the Dutch aristocracy. Helena Pieters married Jan Andries Durkopp and died in Batavia on 3 September 1759.
