On 29 September 1548 he was born at Landshut, son of Albrecht V, Duke
of Bavaria, and Archduchess Anna of Austria. On 22 February 1568 in Vienna
he married Renee de Lorraine and they became the parents of ten children.
In 1579 he succeeded his father as Duke of Bavaria.
He ruled his duchy from 1579 to 1597 with an ascetic piety that was
a ounter-Reformation ideal. In 1597, overcome with sickness and cares of
state, Wilhelm abdicated his throne in order to devote himself more fully
to works of piety, to pilgrimages and the construction of churches, to
charity and mortifications of his flesh.
On 17 February 1626 he died at Schleissheim and was buried in St.Michael's
in Muenchen.
