Born in 1590, he married on 25 November 1615 Anna Amalia von Baden, and they produced twelve children. In 1629 he obtained the counties of Saarbruecken and Ottweiler. Shortly afterwards he enlisted in the Swedish army. In 1635 he was forced to flee his own lands and died 22 August 1640 in Metz. His wife survived him until she died in Saarbruecken on 18 November 1651
