Willem Frederik studied in Franeker, Friesland but learned his military craft in the service of his cousin and father-in-law, Frederik Hendrik, Prince of Orange, being made Captain in 1625. In
1648 he became a General in the Artillery. His father had died of a bullet wound; his elder brother, Hendrik Casimir I died of a pistol shot wound on 12 July 1640 in the battle for Hulst in Zeeland. Willem Frederik then succeeded his brother as Stadhouder of Friesland. While cleaning his pistol, he was wounded and died on 24 October 1664, and was buried in Leeuwarden. His wife, Albertine Agnes, became Regent (1664-1677) in Friesland during the minority of their son Hendrik 
Casimir II.
