William d'Aubigny, 3rd Earl of Arundel, Earl of Sussex (1173-1221)
Born 1173
Died 30 March 1221 Cainell nr Rome
Married
Mabel de Meschines

In 1193 he succeeded his father and became 3rd Earl of Arundel. In the
beginning he was one of King John's favourites, but then he joined the
baronial party opposing the King in 1216 after the sealing of the
Magna Carta. According to the Barnwell annalist, when the barons met
in London in 1216 to plan the division of England between them, they
assigned to d'Albini the government of Lincolnshire. In 1217 he
switched his support back to the young Henry III but the next year
went on crusade. He died on his travels.
