When he became King of Poland he signed "Nihil novi", a statute which
did a great deal of harm to the process of ruling Poland, as it decreed
that no new business could be conducted without the unanimous consent of
the three estates: the King, the Senate and the representatives of the
landowners. As the landowners feared to give the King a big standing army,
the country became military unprepared.
However, he drove the Russians out of Lithuania after his victory at
Orsza. Zygmunt tolerated Lutheranism and was a just ruler.
