Title: Dictionnaire de La Noblesse -19 Volumes-
Author: Francois Alexandre Aubert de la Chenaye-Desbois
and Jacques Badier
Published: 1863-1876
Publisher: reprinted 10 volumes 1980 Berger-Levrault, Paris
Rating: C
Online Review: In their "Dictionnaire de la noblesse francaise",
Sereville and St.Simon called the author "le prince de tous les faussaires"
(prince of forgers).
Reliable from 1500 or so on, the rest is all too often cited and recopied,
but bear in mind that the writers did not edit nor even check all the genealogies
sent to them by the families concerned, that is asking for trouble.
A hack job, much of it plagiarized from other works, usually Pere Anselme.
The documentation of other more careful researchers is stripped out when
they pilfer the words of others. However, use it with caustion, it is a
convenient finding aid that will notify you if the family you seek is prominent
enough to have others write about it. The challenge is then to find where
those authors got their data.
