Charlotte de Bourbon, a member of the French royal family, was brought
up to be a nun and became the abbess of a French convent. Changing her
religion, she escaped from the convent and, fleeing to Germany, sought
refuge with the Elector Palatine. After a while she accepted the marriage
proposal from the Prince of Orange and they became the parents of six daughters.
On instigation of King Philip II of Spain, the Prince of Orange was almost
assassinated. A subsequent attempt in 1584 would succeed. But previously
in 1582, Charlotte de Bourbon, while trying to nurse her husband, herself
died. Three daughters went to Germany and three to France; one of these
latter returned many years later to the Catholic religion to become a nun
and an abbess in turn.
