(Most of the information on the
Cyprus branch is from Steven Runciman's "History of the Crusade")
The traditional pedigree of the Lusignans was revised by Painter,
in which he argues the existence of an additional HUGH (HUGH VIIIa here)
See Todd A Farmerie's message of 14 June 1996 for further details.

MYTHOLOGY
The castle at Lusignan is said to be have been built by Raymond, a relative
of the Counts POITIERS and his mythical wife, the spirit of the fountain
of Lusignan. He broke his vow and spied her on a Saturday, to find that
she had turned into a serpent from the waist down. She flew out of the
castle window never to be seen again, but on the death of a member of the
Lusignan family, she is heard crying out. Another source states she was
a dau. of the fairy Pressine whom she had shut up in a mountain to avenge
his wrongs, but he caste a spell that she should metamorphosed every Saturday,
unless and until she found an husband who would vow not to see her on Saturdays.
This history is related at length with the adventures of Melusine's numerous
progeny: by JEAN d'ARRAS, in his chronique de la princesse, written in
1387 at the desire of JOHN Dk of BERRY, for the amusement of the duke and
of his sister Marie of France, duchess of Bar. Some writers have supposed
Melusine to be a corruption of mere Lucine, the deity invoked in childbirth,
widow of a king of Jerusalem, and with Mevrant wife of GEOFFROI de Lusignan.
Many of the Lusignan's have the soubriquet le Brun. Perhaps this indicates
foreign (eastern?) blood.
HUGH/HUGES I The Hunter; Sire of Lusignan in Poitiou and vassal
of Counts of Poitiers in the late 9th or 10th century. There is no evidence
supporting a link with the Merovingian dynasty as shown in the book The
Holy Blood and The Holy Grail.
HUGH VIII (c1118-c1172) de Lusignan; The BROWN m Bergone/ Bourgogne/Burgone
(c1120-aft 11 Apr 1169) de Taillebourg d of Geoffrey de Rancon. In late
1163 NAR ED-DIN taking advantage of AMALRIC's absence in Egypt, attacked
Tripoli. He invaded the Buqaia so as to lay siege to Krak castle. But HUGH
de Lusignan, GEOFFREY MARTEL brother to Ct ANGOULEME and their followers,
were passing through Tripoli on return from Jerusalem. They joined Ct RAYMOND
and an urgent appeal to Antioch brought BOHEMOND III and the Imperial general
CONSTANTINE COLOMAN down from the north. This united army marched swiftly
through the hills and surprised the Moslems at their camp below Krak. After
a short battle, in which COLOMAN and his troops distinguished themselves,
NAR ED-DIN fled in disorder to Homs, regrouped his army and received reinforcement
whence the Christians abandoned the pursuit. In 1164 HUGH with BOHEMOND,
RAYMOND of Tripoli and CONSTANTINE COLOMAN were taken prisoners at the
siege of Harenc and taken to Aleppo
HUGH VIIIa (-1169) de Lusignan m Orengarde. Originally he was
omitted from early pedigrees.
GEOFFREY (-aft 1202); older than GUY & probably older than
AMALRIC II; In 1189 at siege of Acre; On 11 May 1191 arrived at Limassol,
with his br king GUY; No doubt they were at king RICHARD's wedding 12 May
1191. GEOFFREY is called Count of LUSIGNAN by Steven Runciman (presumably
as guardian of HUGH IX?) and one of king RICHARD's leading vassals in Fr;
In Sept 1191 was at battle of Arsuf; In 1197 he was governor of Jaffa;
In 1197 (before GUY's death) he returned to Fr. In 1202 the Poitevins including
ARTHUR of Brittany (with Eleanor, both issue of K JOHN of England's br
GEOFFREY), GEOFFREY of Lusignan and his nephew HUGH IX were besieging Queen
Eleanor of Aquitaine at Mirabeau castle, nr Poitiers. On 1 Aug K JOHN captured
200 of them in a lightning strike. The Lusignans, luckier than the rest
were ransomed. Perhaps this GEOFFREY is the GEOFFROI de Lusignan mentioned
above under Mythology whose wife was Mevrant. O'Hart's "Irish Pedigrees"
shows descendants of this GEOFFREY. See below.
HUGH IX (-1219) de Lusignan; Ct LA MARCHE; The Brown; One ref.
states he was Ct Poitou; engaged to Isabella Taillefeur of Angouleme, but
in 1200, when she was in the care of HUGH'S uncle, Ct of EU, she was taken
by his feudal lord K JOHN of Eng who wed her at Bordeaux in Aug (subsequently
5 issue) HUGH formed an alliance with PHILIP II K of Fr against K JOHN
resulting in JOHN's loss of his continental possessions. HUGH may have
m Agetha de Preuilly, but most references show he m Matilda d of WULGRIM
III ct ANGOULEME & sis to AYMER/AIMAR/AUDEMOR Ct ANGOULEME the father
of Isabella Taillefeur. It has been claimed that Matilda was his 2nd wife
and that his issue were by a previous wife, perhaps Agetha?
RALPH/RAOUL I (-1 May 1219) Ct de Eu; de Lusignan. Before Hugh
VIIIa had been added, pedigrees show RALPH as the son of HUGH VIII He m

5 were granted large estates in Eng. by Hy III By 1258 the jealous barons
forced them into exile, but were subsequently allowed to return.

QUERIES
In ca 10th century ALFONSO ct EU m Marie de Lusignan. How does this

History of Herefordshire by John Edwin Cussans states that: Peter de
Valance (l 1093) of Northaw manor, Herts. This manor was granted to him
by the Abbot (-1093) and Monks of St Albans, who had owned it in 1066,
limited to the life time of the Abbot but Peter refused to give it up on
the Abbots death as did his son Roger and grand-son Peter. How do these
de Valences fit in?
In O'Hart's Irish pedigrees, it is claimed that Geoffrey de Lusignan
was the ancestors of the Browne's of counties Galway and Mayo. I don't
know how much truth there is in this claim. The Pedigree given therein
starts as follows:
