The Low Countries:
Remarks:
Most of the old Friesian nobility were gentleman-farmers, living in a
"stins" or "state", a fortified manor/farm with private armies. In the
15th century, there was the conflict between the "Schieringers" and the
"Vetkopers", two political factions within Friesland with extreme views
on influence from the county of Holland in Friesland. This resulted in
a
lot of raids and counter-raids on each others (nobles) properties.
Friesian Nobility as such was not very well-defined (first after
Napoleon in 1815 a list was drawn up of families belonging to the
"Uradel" and only a few more have been added since) as Friesland did
not
know a feudal system. Furthermore there was not much "cross-over" to
other Dutch or German nobility. The best source is "Het Stamboek der
Friesche Adel", a huge work in two volumes, written in the 19th century
and of which there are only a handful of copies around at some of the
Dutch archives and libraries. (byMatthias Teichert)
