Wedding Day of Lady Davina on July 31, 2004
  • BBC  News July 31, 2004:
    Royal Family welcomes first Maori:
Lady Davina Windsor, who is 20th in line to the throne, marries a builder and former sheep-shearer from New Zealand after a four-year romance. Gary Lewis met the 26-year-old daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester on the island of Bali in Indonesia in 2000.Mr Lewis, known to friends as "Gazza", is a keen surfer. He becomes the first Maori to marry into the British Royal Family. The wedding was at Kensington Palace.Mr Lewis, 33, said his future in-laws were "no different to anyone else".He comes from Gisborne on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island, and has an 11-year-old son from a former relationship. Mr Lewis' father, Larry, was a champion shearer in New Zealand in the 1980s and his mother, Viki Carr, worked as a maid. He is described as a "renovator" by the New Zealand Herald. Lady Davina, whose father is the Queen's cousin, attended Kensington Preparatory School and later St George's in Ascot. She keeps a low profile and does not carry out any official royal duties. A spokeswoman for the royal household said the couple wanted the wedding to be low-key.She said: "The Queen will not be attending. They are having a quiet, private wedding."
