Notes for JOHANN
DAVID SECKEL:
(1710-1774)
The first immigrant to America
from Schwabisch Hall was Johann David Seckel (1710-1774). He, along with
four other sons and two daughters of Georg Friedrich Seckel (1682-1757)
immigrated to Philadelphia, Pa. from 1736-1751.
Did the third large fire
in Schwabisch Hall in 1728 which annihilated two-thirds of the old town
and the coming of appropriate age (i.e., 26 years) provide the required
motivation for Johann David Seckel to immigrate?
He left for America in the
early summer of 1736, arriving in Philadelphia on 19 October 1736 aboard
the Brigantine "John." Johann David Seckel was among the first 40,000 to
50,000 Germans to arrive in America. The total population of Philadelphia
in 1736 was 10,000- 15,000 persons. During the period 1727-1736, forty-three
ships came from Rotterdam and in the next ten years an additional sixty-eight
ships arrived carrying between two and three hundred passengers each.
It is most likely that Johann
David Seckel (1710-1774) travelled overland to Worms, Speyer, Mannheim,
or nearby and like those who preceded him travelled up the Rhine on a barge
to the great port of Rotterdam.
Aboard the Brigantine "John,"
Master George Fraiser, he landed in Philadelphia on 19 October 1736 having
stopped enroute in Dover, England. His name was recorded as "Johannes Segel"
by the clerk who spelled it as he heard it. John David Sickell's name next
appeared among the early deeds in Philadelphia listed on 05 April 1738
along with his wife, Maria Ursula. John David Sickell's trade was listed
as a butcher

Jurg David Seckel
(1714-1798)
George David Seckel was born
in Schwabisch Hall, Germany, in 1714, the son of Georg Friedrich and his
first wife Rosina Judith (Heyd) Seckel. He is no doubt the George David
"Sockel" who came to Philadelphia in the ship "Betsey" Richard Budden,
master, and took the oath of allegiance there, 27 August, 1739. He was
a land owner in the City and in his will, dated 15 December 1784, proved
30 November, 1798, is styled "Gentleman." He married, 17 August, 1745,
Maria Anna Catharina Margretha Enkelsin, called "Mary Catharine" in his
will. She died
before her husband. They
were the parents of eight children - George Lorentz., born 1746, John David.,
born 1749. Maria B., born 1751. George Friedrich., born 1754. Wilhelm.,
born 1757. Heinrich., born 1759. Susanna C., born 1760. George Phillip.,
born 1766. Both George David and his wife "Mary Catharine" were members
of St. Michael's and Zion Lutheran Church where their marriage is recorded
and where most, is not all, of their children were baptized.
Georg David was the second
Seckel to arrive in the New World and was one of the six children of Georg
Friedrich who immigrated to America from Schwabisch Hall. The original
spelling of his first name was Jurg.
All that was mortal of those
of the Seckel name buried in St. John's Churchyard was removed to the George
David Seckel lot in Laurel Hill in July 1924, when the church property
was condemned by the Delaware River Bridge Commission and ordered demolished.
