Notes for LORENTZ
SECKEL:
#1900
Full name - Georg Lorentz
Seckel, (Lawrence)
Also known as Lorenz, George
Lawrence, Lornetz.
From records of St. Michael's
and Zion Records: Lorentz, son of Jurg David and Anna Catarina Seckel.
b. May 11, bap. June 29 1746. sponsors Lorentz Bast and Wife
1746-1823
The third Seckel born in
the land of opportunity was Lorentz Seckel. Lawrence Seckel, eldest son
of George David Seckel, was born at Philadelphia, Pa., 11 May, 1747; died
6 March, 1823. He was a merchant and prominent citizen of Philadelphia,
where he served as a member of City Councils, and on the Board of Port
Wardens, and also as a member of the Pennsylvania Assembly. He was deeply
interested in charitable and philantropic matters, was a founder and first
treasurer of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Philadelphia, the
first to be organized as an exclusively English Lutheran Church, and the
only one which has maintained a continous existence since 1806. From 1790
until 1820, Mr. Seckel was a manager of the Pennsylvania hospital: was
some years a manager of the Philadelphia Dispensary, and a trustee of the
Young Ladies Seminary, of which the Reverand Samuel Magaw was the president.
He married, first, 18 August, 1775, Barbara, daughter of Jacob Chrystler.
She was living 5 April, 1779, when she joined her husband in a deed. he
married, second 31 July, 1783, Maria Graeff. By his first wife he had but
one child, Mary, and by his second wife he is known to have had two sons,
and one daughter. It is possible that he had other children.
The Diarist, Jacob Hiltzheimer,
writes in Volume XVI, Page 254 of The Penn- sylvania Magazine: "It would
be wrong to leave this side of the river without advertingto the history
of an extraordinary tree. On the place of Lawrence Seckel, afterwards of
the Girard Estate, near Point Breeze, stood a pear tree, the fruit of which
was used for many years by a tenant until at last Mr. Seckel eating thereof
discovered its great excellence. Its origin is entirely unknown, but it
is the respected anscestor of all the Seckel pear trees of the country."
Watson says in his annals
of Philadelphia:
"The Seckel pear was cultivated
by Lawrence Seckel, and the original tree stands on the place in the Neck,
once his and afterwards Stephen Girard's about five miles from Philadelphia
and about one mile above the confluence of the Delaware and Schuylkill
rivers. * * * He told the father of C. J. Wistar (my informant) when he
gave him some of the pears, that he knew not how the tree came there."
From: The gardener's Monthly,
January 1865
** "Lorenz Seckel was a well-known
wine merchant of Philadelphia, and the farm on which the tree stands was
his country seat, in a then somewhat fashionable rural district, now given
over to the growth of plethoric cabbages, endless tomatoes, and onions
infinite."...
"May 1, 1784 - went to Lawrence
Seckel's place where a number of gentlemen dined on shad and beefsteaks.
His excellency General Washington arrived here from Virginia." As quoted
from the Pennsylvania Magazine Volume 16, page 168.
"On 25 May 1779, Lawrence
Seckel joined in a petition to the Second Continental Congress deploring
the "Decay of Credit and the Depreciation of the Money" as a destructive
force upon the efforts of our patriots in the establishment of the Country."
The First Continental Congress
served September 5, 1774 to October 6, 1774. The Second Continental Congress
served May 10, 1775 for six years. Both met at Carpenter's Hall - built
1770. "The papers of the Continental Congress" contain a paper "Inhabitants
of Pennsylvania and other states" by Lawrence Seckel, dated 25 May 1779
Lawrence Sickle served in
the Pennsylvania General Assembly 1789 and 1790 according to the Susquehannah
Company Papers by Rob't. J. Taylor Vol. X, Pages 17, 92, and 95.
Lawrence Seckel (1746-1823)
along with approximately fifteen (15) members of the Pennsylvania House
of Representatives dined at President George Washing- ton's house on Market
Street including the President and Mrs. Washington and four members of
their family on 5 Sept. 1791 -
The Pennsylvania Magazine,
Vol. 20, page 199.
Lawrence Sickel (1746-1823)
dined with the President and Mrs. Washington on 18 Feb. 1797 shortly before
Washington's term expired along with other repre- sentatives of the Pennsylvania
House.
