Ann Walton "was a rigid
moralist and a member of Friends meeting at Byberry, Penn. She was a decided
orthodox, and her lessons on the subject of religion have been the basis
of my christial faith throughout my whole life. The burden of her teaching
was honesty, strict honesty, in our dealings with all mankind".

Notes for GEORGE
PEPPER:
#2060
George Pepper, born 15 March,
1779, was educated for mercantile life and entered the counting house of
the eminent merchants Willing & Francis, where he was becoming well
equipped for a successful business career, when, owing to the death of
his elder brother, Philip, in 1800 he was called at the age of twenty-one,
to assist his father in the conduct of his extensive brewery interests.
He inherited large means
from his father, which, by sagacity and industry, he converted into still
greater wealth, until, with the single exception, possibly of
Stephen Girard, he became
the richest citizen of his day. His town house on the north side of Chestnut
Street below Eighth, had a garden which was a picture of good taste and
science with a greenhouse, the first built in Philadelphia.
Early in life Mr. Pepper
owned the "Plantation House," the present site of the United States Naval
Asylum, the one time country seat of James Pemberton, who died in 1808.
Later he had a beautiful suburban seat, known as "Fairy Hill," near the
ground on Ridge Road, now occupied by the Laurel Hill Cemetery. He paid
much attention to horticulture and had a fine nursery of fruit and other
trees. His collection of camelias numbering twenty-eight or more varieties
was, perhaps, the finest in the United States.
His death is referred to
editorically in The United States Gazette of January 8, 1846: "We learn
that George Pepper, Esq., died on Tuesday night, at his residence on Chestnut
St. below Eighth. Mr. Pepper was among the most respected and wealthy of
our citizens, perhaps the wealthiest. He lived an irreproachable life and
amid all the vicissitudes of the time, sustained a lofty integrity." Professor
Thorpe's "Biographical Memoir of William Pepper" con-
tains a St. Memin portrait
of George Pepper and says of him, in part:
Long before he reached middle
life he was one of the wealthiest men in the City...His large estate has
been the source of many benefactions to the City of Philadelphia. Several
millions derived from it have been devoted by gift and bequest to public
uses, of which the best known are the city hospitals, the free public library
and the University of Pennsylvania. No other estate, accumulated in Philadelphia,
during the first half of the Nineteenth Centrury, excepting that
of Stephen Girard, has contributed
so generously to science and education. His widow, Mrs. Mary (Seckel) Pepper,
reached the advanced age of eighty-one years possessing remarkable energy
and activity of mind and body and devoting herself up to her very last
days to the good and happiness of others."
