Barbara was born in Akron, Ohio February 10, 1945 the daughter of Paul Robert and Nina Pauline (Jacobs) Seckel. She married Paul Mitchell Jeter, son of Edgar and Ester (Ray) Jeter. They were divorced in 1988. They are the parents of two children - Paul Mitchell, Jr., born February 10, 1965 and April Lynn., born February 5, 1968. April married Neil Allen Harper on February 5, 1968 and they have a son Neil Allen Harper, Jr., born September 2, 1992. Barbara works at Holiday Inn and is very active in the Baptist Church.

Robert was born May 26, 1946 in Akron, Ohio the son of Paul Robert and Nina Pauline (Jacobs) Seckel. After serving in the Navy, he married Linda Ann Diehl, daughter of Russell and Ester (Stroll) Diehl on October 11, 1970. They are the parents of four daughters - Michele Renee., born May 28, 1967, Robin Lynn., born November 11, 1969, Bobbie Jo., born February 6, 1973 and Nicole Marie., born September 26, 1974.
Robin Lynn's daughter Tiffani Marie was born September 11, 1988. Robert is a T.V. repairman and enjoys bowling. They still reside in Akron, Ohio.

REACHING TROUBLED YOUTHS
Treatment center's spiritual director must rely on more than words                     By Naomi Warren Klouda Special Daily News

A preacher specializing in children has to tote more than a Bible. Kevin Seckel, spiritual director of Alaska Children's Services, needs puzzles, a sweat lodge and rosemary. And a coyote who won't let another coyote tell him what he is.
Symbols go where words can't penetrate, Seckel says. The 60 children and teens in residential treatment for emotional and behavioral problems at the Abbott Road campus require different spiritual approaches.

Ranging in age from 7 to 16, they're a difficult set to pigeonhole. Some were abused; others brushed against the wrong side of the law. They now have to come to grips with whatever struggles put them in treatment. So the preacher doesn't preach. He helps them fashion puzzles from blocks of wood. "We do a lot with puzzles because life is a puzzle you can't figure out," he says.

The plastic-tarped sweat lodge allows a ceremonial cleansing for a fresh start. Rosemary is the purifying herb they burn and smudge on their faces. Native American stories are rich with symbols as well. "I'm going to tell you a story about coyote," the Methodist pastor tells his kids. He raises two index fingers toward the ceiling to illustrate a pointed-eared animal, "Coyote One came upon another coyote and said, "I see you are a coyote..." Coyote Two denies the identification. "No, I'm not," he insists. "I'm Another." Then two humans, watching one coyote pass, and then the other, observe, "There goes Another."
The second coyote triumphantly turns to the first. "See, I'm not a coyote," he says. "I'm Another." Seckel uses the story to talk about labels. "These are kids who have been labeled by the system, by their families, by themselves. I try to get them to see who they are as God has made them.," he said.

The preacher is well appreciated at Alaska Children's Services because his role as spiritual director complements the total treatment package. Jeanne Johnson, community relations manager, says Seckel's position is unique. Most treatment facilities for troubled children and teens do not have full-time staff concerned specifically with the calming influences of spiritual matters. But it's a tough job, opened and closed frequently by a revolving door. "I'm only with some of these kids for a little while, given the nature of treatment programs," Seckel says. "I have to plant the seed quickly and gently with the hope that when they are back on the street or somewhere else, they will remember."

Seckel, whose wife, Carol, is also an ordained Methodist minister and is currently the Alaska missionary conference superintendent, has spent most of his career with troubled children. He began as a teacher not a pastor-in Ohio teaching industrial arts at a high school. "In shop class, you usually get the ones that don't fit in," he says. So he taught them mechanics and woodworking. He found there that the simple act of taking concrete objects apart and putting them back together had a soothing effect. That soothing effect worked again in Sitka at a residential treatment center for adults whose lives had become confused by drugs and alcohol. He had them build objects from wood. But at Alaska Children's Services when he was first hired, he wasn't sure what would work. Chapel isn't required, and no one was coming voluntarily, though he continued to invite the students.

Then, three months into his new position, after Seckel had won their trust through storytelling and "meeting them on their turf," the kids started showing up. Now 60 percent of them come on their own.
