Notes for MICHEL
SECKEL:
Butcher in Schwabisch Hall
1459/1513, Ratsherr 1493/1511.
1483 Endowment of an almsplate.
Donated great sums of money for the poor and incurables - A coat of arms
is on a Board of Honor on the north side, the fifth and sixth chapel of
St. Michael's Church in Schwabisch Hall, Germany He was a member of the
ruling group of aldermen or councillors and he invested his money in real-estate
and, at Hall, also in shares in the salt spring. In 1474 he bought for
36 Gulden a yard outside the Eichtor (city gate) and probably much more
land of which we do not know.
He bought from Gotz von Bachenstein
half a boilery, but could not replace the hereditary boiler, Hans Geyer,
as he wanted to . His son Lienhard would later hold title to one quarter
of this boilery. Michel bought several other boileries later on: 3/4 which
Wilhelm Blinzig boiled, 1/3 which Michel Halberg boiled and 1/8 which Daniel
Bomlin boiled.
He himself remained in the
butcher trade; naturally he did not work in the Haal but only collected
his yearly annuity. This way his money multiplied in spite of the prohibition
to accrue interest. He who is rich can also give - as a matter of fact
he must give. Therefore, Michel Seckel and his wife Katharine Kraft bought
in 1483 a place in the infirmary for incurable persons for the princely
sum of 300 Gulden.
In 1502 he donated a "dish
for the poor" i.e., a meal in the infirmary always on Sundays. It is therefore
no wonder that this rich benefactor was elected into the council ("He was
councilled") from 1493 to 1511. He was a member of the council until 1511.
He died shortly thereafter - probably of weakness as he might have been
80 years of age.
