A George Swope of Paradise Township, York County, Pennsylvania, wrote
his Will the 11th of March 1780; the will was probated the 27th of May
1782. He named his wife, Anna Maria, and stated "I give to my son
Ten Pounds Lawful Passing Money of Pennsylvania besides what he has got
already and all my cloathing and Carpetner Tooles also I five and bequeath
to my daughter a Cow and a Bible. Also I give to my Dear Wife Anna Mariea
the Remainder of my Estate during her Natural Life and after her Decease
to remain to her Children." This will gives the impression that this
George Swoope had only one son and one daughter living at the time the
Will was made. George Swope had either already settled with his other children
and decided it was unnecessary to name them in his Will, or this is another
Georg Schwab / George Swope.

COLONEL MICHAEL SCHWAB/SWOPE (No. 2, page 1347), son of Johann Georg
ard Anna Maria (Keydel) Schwab, was brought by his parents to Pennsylvania
on the ship ,,William and Sarah" when he was a baby of one year. He
was a nephew of Jost Schwab. On board this same ship was Hans Jorg Schwab
of Leimen, son of Jost Schwab, with his family, and a friend, Hans Casper
Spengler, from Weiler under Steinsberg near Sinsheim, who had with his
his two year old daughter, Anna Marie. Undoubtedly this family were friends
of the Schwabs for several generations. They made the journey to Pennsylvania
together; then settled in York County together. To this day (check the
index to Volume one) intermarriages are still taking place among the descendants
ot this family and of the Schwabs.
When he was a young man, Michael Schwab married Anna Maria Spengler
(FGS p. 1350), daughter of Casper Spengler. They had at least two children
before her untimely death. Michael's sister, Anna Margreth Schwabin (,,in"
is the female ending for Schwab and other surnames in the German language)
was the sponsor at the christening of their daughter, Anna Margareth. Jacob
and Helena Billmeyer were the sponsors at the christening of Anna Maria,
another daughter.
After the death of Anna Maria, Michael Schwab married Eva Barbara Kuhn,
daughter of Adam Simon Kuhn, a noted and influential citizen of Lancaster,
Records of birth of two of their children have been located. (See page
1350). Dr. Adam Simon Kuhn and his wife, Marie Sabine, were sponsors for
one son, Adam Simon. Sponsers for their son, George, were Balthaser Spengler
and his wife. Another son, Jacob, was born about 1766. He was a clerk for
Kuhn and Risberg of Philadelphia and went to Staunton, Virginia to take
charge of one of their establishments in 1789. He married Mary McDowell,
daughter of William McDowell of Staunton, 2 Jum 1790, and resided in Staunton
for the rest of his life, becoming a wealthy and influential Southern gentleman.
He was elected the first mayor ot Staunton in 1802, and was elected to
the United States Congress from the Augusta district 1809-1811. He was
the leader of the Federalist party in that area. A large proportion of
the settlers in that area were Germans from Pennnylvania, and voted for
him because he was from Pennsylvania and spoke German. He died in Staunton
in 1832; his Will was probated in the Augusta County Court, 23 April 1832.
His wife had already died, but he left property to the folloving childrenz;
William Swoope married Eliza Trent; John M. Swoope; Jacob K. Swoope; Edgar
Swoope; Washington Swoope; and Sarah R. Swoope.
Col. Michael Swope commanded the first battalion of the Flying Camp
which had been formed from members of five battalions of York County militia
into two battalions. In July 1776 they had marched from York County to
New Jersey. They suffered severely in the battles of Long Island and Fort
Washington. Colonel Swope and fourteen of his officers were captured by
the British on the sixteenth of Novenber 1776 when Fort Washington was
defeated. He was released January 26, 1781 in an exchange of prisoners
in Elisabethtown, New Jersey and walked the distance of 170 miles to his
home in York.
His name appears on a York County, Pennsylvania list of taxables for
1783 - ,,Michael Swope, storekeeper, York Tovn, 4 males, 1 female, 1 negro,
2 horned
page 1349
cattle, 2 horses, 1 lot, 2 houses, 1 chair, plate valued at pound 32,
merchandise valued at pound149.0.0, tax pound 13.9,9.
On the first of June 1784 Michael Swoope of York, York County, Pa. and
Baltzer Spengler of the same place each purchased from Michael Madden of
Alexandria, Virginia, one-half of lot No. 96 on the southwest corner of
Wolfe and Water streets in Alexandria, Virginia (Fairfax Co. Deed Book
P, page 138). The deed was recorded on the 16th of November 1784. On the
22 December 1784 Michael Swoope of Alexandria purchased from Robert McCrea
and Ann, his wife, and Robert Mease lot #64 on the West side of Water Street
and the south side of Prince Street in Alexandria. From this we conclude
that Michael Swope/Swoope moved from York, Pa., to Alexandria, Va, in 1784,
but I have been unable to learn when he died.
On the tenth of January 1804 Jacob Swope was appointed administrator
of the Estate of Eva Barbara Swope. He, Peter Heiskell, and Philip G. Marstellar
put up a $20,000 bond on the Estate of Eva Barbara Swpe late of Alexandria
County, Virginia, deceased. Alexandria Co. Will Book A, page 238; inventory
page 256-259). Some of the articles of the estate were sold to Adam S.
Swope, but on the 3lst of March 1804, Lewis Summers of Alexandria County
was appointed Deputy Marshall of the goods, chattels and credits of Adam
S. Swope of Alexandria County, deceased and Jacob Swope was appointed administrator
of his estate. In this document Jacob Swope signs his name ,,Swoope."

JOHANNES (2) JOST(1) SCHWAB
JOHANNES SCHWAB or JOHN SWOPE (No. 9, page 1288) (signed his name,,John
Schwob in his Will), was born in Leimen, Baden, Germany, the son of Jost
and Anna Katharina (Wolfhardt) Schwab. He was sixteen years old when he
made the journey to Pennsylvania with his parents. They settled in the
Conestoga Valley of Lancaster County; then it was part of Chester County
and a wilderness. His father depended on this young man to help him clear
the wilderness so that the land could be farmed. Johannes' older brother,
George, did not come to Pennsylvania until 1727. Very little is known of
his brothers, Jost Conrad and Hans Ulrich. Their names do not appear on
the early taxlists of Chester or Lancaster County. There is a tradition
that Hans Ulrich Schwab changed his name to Joseph and moved his family
to what is now West Virginia.
Johannes Schwab pioneered the Conestoga Valley and cleared his land
for farming. His father, Jost, died in December 1726 or Jamary 1727 and
Johannes was appointed the administrator of his estate; frugal as
his personal estate was (see page 1307), he is aupposed te have died 1000
acres surveyed to him of which there is no record, Johannes Schwab had
450 acres patented to him between 1733 and 1753. When he died, he willed
452 acres to his four sons: Jacob, Henry, Daniel, and Adam.
Johannes Schwab was not only a farmer, but was also a potter. His descendants
for several generations were potters in Lancaster County. His son, Conrad,
was an eartenware potter in York County where he resided. Every
colonial village needed a potter to turn out the utensils that were so
necessary on every farm and in the kitchen of every dwelling. All
early American pottery was "redware" which was shaped from plain
brick clay that was colored naturally by iron oxide. The Pennsylvania Dutch
potters made beautiful Sgraffitowarre by dipping the articles into white
slip and, after it had set up, would scratch patterns of tulips, lilies,
etc, through it revealing the red clay underneath. We would really have
a cherished article if we could find a piece of pottery or a dish with
the name of Johannes Schwab or one of his sons or gradsons upon it. The
Papers of the Lancaster County Historical Society, vol, 50, 1946, page
118 and 121 state tat Jacob Swope, a descendant of Johannes Schwab, living
north of Bird-in-Hand was operating a pottery in 1820; ,,he was making
roofing tiles." His son, Zuriel, also in the pottery business, made
clay pipes.
Johannes Schwab married about 1725 Anna Derothea Lein (FGS p. 1360)
the daughter of Johannes Lein/Line/Lyne whose will appears on page 1358.
Johannes Lein was an early settler in Leacock Township and an elder
at Salem (Heller) Reformed Church. His daughter, Barbara Lein, wife of
Jahn Jacob Weidler, was still living in Germany when her father wrote his
will in 1746. If John Lyne (Johannes Lein) had stated where in Germany
she was living, he might have facilitated the searches of his descendants
for the records af his birthplace. He was a close associate of Emanuel
Carpenter (Zimmerman in the original German), another early settler who
owned considerable property in Lancaster County. Emanuel Carpenter's wife's
name by tradition was Catharine Lein.
page 1354
Since she is not named in his will, she must not have been a daughter
of Johannes Lein (John Lyne), but she may have been his sister.
Anna Dorothea (Lein) Schwab bore Johannes Schwab ten children, seven
girls and three boys. (See page 1360). She died about 1740. One of her
daughters, Anna Barbara, married Philip Gloninger and became the ancestor
of another Swope family through the marriage of her granddaughter Anna
Maria (Mary) Gloninger to Christian Schwob. (See page 144).
On the 25th of May 1742 Johannes Schwab took as his second wife, Catharine
Elisabetha Greve. Emanuel Carpenter, Justice of the Peace in Lancaster
County married them. The following marriage affidavit appears in the History
of the Swope Family and Their Connections. 1678-1896 by Gilbert Ernest
Swope.

The signatures on this marriage affidavit are a roster of Johannes Schwab's
relatives and friends. Hans Georg Schwob was his brother; Eved Rim (Eberhardt
Riehm) and probably Johan Heinrich Klein, his brothers-in-law, husbands
of his sisters; Elisabeth Rimen, Annamaria Meixelin, and probably Anna
Margaretha Kleinin, his sisters; Andreas Meixel, his nephew; Johannes Lein
the elder, his father-in-law (father of his first wife, Anna Dorothea);
Johannes Lein, his first wife's father); Johannes Lein, his first wife's
brother; Catharina Zimmermaennin was the wife of Emanuel Carpenter/Zimmerman
(he had changed his name to the anglicized form Carpenter). Conradt Templemann
was the lay preacher of the Reformed Church, but being unordained he could
not marry them. Michael Weidler and John Lein represented the ,,Berg Church"
(Hill Church or Conestoga Church), now called Salem or Heller's Reformed
Church, at the meeting of the Coetus of Pennsylvania. John Lein's daughter,
Barbara, was the wife of Johan Jacob Weidler. They were still living in
Germany in 1746, but her husband may very well have been a relative of
Michael Weidler. The only ones not identified as part of the family are
Ludwig Franciscus, Johan Michael Kraemer, Conrad and Elisabeth Feit, and
Johannes Greff.
Where were the relatives of Catharina Elisabeth Greve? Was Johannes
Greff (better known as Hans Graeff, the noted Indian trader) her father
- her surname ,,Greve" a corruption of the German ,,Graeff?"
Her broken tombstone in Heller's churchyard states she was born 22 October
1715. She bore Johannes Schwab nine children, five daughters and four sons.
She died before her husband on the fourteenth of August 1776 (FGS p. 1361).
