This is an account of the Landgraves of Thuringia. As a prelude to an account of the House of Wettin, an account of this family is necessary, since Thuringia served as the base of the Wettins' later prosperity. Thuringia was originally a small area between Saxony and Franconia with the large Thuringian forest along its southern border. There had originally been a distinct Thuringian people, but the territory had been amalgamated and assimiliated with Saxony. At the end of the 11th century Ludwig with the beard began accumulating various fiefs in the province, and his grandson was named Landgrave of Thuringia. The death of Heinrich Raspe set up a conflict between his nephews the Duke of Brabant and the [Wettin] Margrave of Meissen, the latter eventually gaining Thuringia, while the former received Hesse and adopted the old title of Landgrave. Ludwig "mit dem Barte", or "with the beard", was Ct in Thuringia and d.ca 1080; he left by his wife Caecilie von Sangerhausen: 1.Ludwig "der Salier", Ct in Thuringia, d.1123; m.1088 Adelheid von Stade (ca 1060-1110) 1.1.Hermann, d.1114 1.2.Ludwig I, Landgrave of Thuringia (ca 1090-1140); m.Hedwig von Gudensberg (d.1148), heiress of an important part of Hesse 1.2.1.Ludwig II "the Iron", Landgrave of Thuringia (ca 1128-1172); m.1150 Jutta (d.1191) dau.of Duke Friedrich II of Swabia 1.2.1.1.Ludwig III, Landgrave of Thuringia, Ct Palatine of Saxony (ca 1152-1190); m.1st 1172 Margarete, dau.of Ct Dietrich II of Cleves; m.2d ca 1184 Sophie (d.1198) dau.of Pr Wolodar of Polotzk 1.2.1.1.1.Jutta, d.after 6 Sep 1208; m.before 1190 Dietrich von Wettin, Ct von Groitzsch (d.1207) 1.2.1.2.Hermann I, Landgrave of Thuringia, Ct Palatine of Saxony, d.1217; m.1st ca 1182 Sofie (d.1189/90) dau.of Friedrich, Ct Palatine von Sommerschenburg; m.2d 1196 Sofie (d.1238) dau.of Duke Otto I of Bavaria 1.2.1.2.1.Hermann, b.before 1200, d.1216 1.2.1.2.2.[St.]Ludwig IV, Landgrave of Thuringia (1200-1227); m.1221 [St.]Elizabeth, Pss of Hungary (1207-1231) 1.2.1.2.2.1.Hermann II, Landgrave of Thuringia (1223-1241); m.1239 Helene (d.1273) dau.of Duke Otto of Brunswick 1.2.1.2.2.2.Sofie (1224-1275); m.1240 Duke Henry II of Brabant (d.1248) 1.2.1.2.2.3.Gertrud, Abbess at Altenberg nr Wetzlar (1227-1297) 1.2.1.2.3.Heinrich Raspe, Landgrave of Thuringia (ca 1202-1247); he was set up as anti-king to Friedrich II in 1246; m.1st Elisabeth N (d.1231); m.2d 1239 Gertrud, dau.of Duke Leopold VI of Austria; m.3d 1241 Beatrix (ca 1225-1288) dau.of Duke Henry II of Brabant 1.2.1.2.4.Konrad, Grand Master of the Teutonic Knights (ca 1204-1241) 1.2.1.2.5.Jutta (ca 1183-1235); m.1st Dietrich, Margrave of Meissen (d.1221); m.2d 1223 Ct Poppo XIII von Henneberg (d.1245) 1.2.1.2.6.Hedwig, d.1247; m.1211 Ct Albrecht von Orlamuende (d.1227) 1.2.1.2.7.Irmgard (ca 1197-ca 1244); m.ca 1211 Fst Heinrich I of Anhalt (d.1252) 1.2.1.2.8.Agnes (ca 1204-before 1247); m.1st 1225 Duke Heinrich of Austria (d.1228); m.2d Duke Albrecht I of Saxony (d.1261) 1.2.1.3.Heinrich Raspe III, d.1180 1.2.1.4.Ct Friedrich von Ziegenhain, d.1229; m.before 1186 Liutgard von Ziegenhain (d.after 1297) 1.2.1.4.1.Sofie, d.after 2 Apr 1247; m.Burkhard VI, Burggrave of Magdeburg (d.1246) 1.2.1.4.2.Judith, d.1220; m.Ct Friedrich II von Brehna (d.1221) 1.2.1.5.Jutta; m.Ct Hermann III von Ravensburg (d.after 1218) 1.2.2.Heinrich Raspe II, Ct von Gudensburg, d.ca 1155 1.2.3.Ludwig, Ct von Thamsbrueck, d.1189 1.2.4.Caecilie; m.Duke Ulrich II of Bohemia (d.1177) 1.2.5.Adelheid, Abbess in Eisenach, d.after 1140 1.2.6.Mechtild; m.Dietrich von Ballenstaedt, Ct von Werben 1.3.Udo, Bp of Naumburg, d.1148 1.4.Heinrich Raspe I, d.1130; m.1122 Hedwig N 1.5.Adelheid (ca 1087-1146); m.Ct Ulrich von Weimar (d.1112) 1.6.Kunigunde, d.1118; m.Ct Wichmann in Saxony 1.7.Caecilie, d.1141; m.Ct Gerlach I von Veldenz 2.Ct Beringer von Sangerhausen, d.before 25 Jul 1110; m.Bertrada (d.1145) dau.of Ct Konrad von Wettin 2.1.Ct Konrad von Hohnstein, d.1145 2.2.Kunigunde; m.
