Most sources cite one Luitpold (d.907) as the earliest certain ancestor of the Wittelsbachs. There
have been suggestions that the family was of the same line as the Capets, and other
suggestions that they were of the same line as the Babenbergs of Austria. Most historians regard
these suggestions as being incorrect. For this series I will assume Luitpold as the progenitor. He

Duke Rudolf I of Upper Bavaria (see Part 4) had issue, the Electors Palatine of the Rhine. The
non-reigning members of the family were known as Counts Palatine of whatever branch they
belonged to (Simmern, Neuburg, Sulzbach, Zweibruecken, Birkenfeld, etc) until in 1777 a
member of this branch inherited the lands of the last of the junior Wittelsbachs, the Electors of
Bavaria, thus re-uniting the two branches after almost 500 years. Rudolf I's descendants were as

Duke Ludwig IV of Bavaria (see Part 4), Holy Roman Emperor, set out to aggrandize his branch
of the family. He invested his eldest son with the Margravate of Brandenburg when the Ascanian
house became extinct. He saw to it that the sons by his 2d marriage (to Margaret of Holland)
succeeded to the county of Holland. When Louis died his sons began a process of dividing
Bavaria into individual fiefs. This continued until it was pretty much re-united in 1506. Louis left
