Most sources cite one Luitpold (d.907) as the earliest certain ancestor of the Wittelsbachs. There have been suggestions that the family was of the same line as the Capets, and other suggestions that they were of the same line as the Babenbergs of Austria. Most historians regard these suggestions as being incorrect. For this series I will assume Luitpold as the progenitor. He left by his wife Kunigunde, dau.of the Swabian Ct Palatine Berthold, the following issue: 1.Arnulf, Duke of Bavaria, d.937; m.ca 910 Judith, probably dau.of Eberhard, Ct in Suelichgau 1.1.Duke Eberhard of Bavaria, living 938 1.2.Arnulf, Ct Palatine in Bavaria, d.954 1.2.1.Berthold, Ct on the Upper Isar, d.ca 990; m.a dau.of Duke Frederick of Lorraine 1.2.1.1.Friedrich I, Ct on the Upper Isar and Wasserburg; m.a dau.of Ct Kuno von Oehningen 1.2.1.2.Ct Dietrich I von Wasserburg, living 1020 1.2.1.2.1.Ct Berthold II von Diessen; for his descendants See Part 2. 1.2.1.2.2.Ct Otto I von Diessen, living 1060 1.2.1.2.2.1.Beatrix; m.Duke Heinrich III of Carinthia 1.2.1.2.2.2.Bertha; m.Adalbert, Vizedom of Freising 1.2.1.2.3.Ct FriedrichII von Diessen, d.ca 1075; for his descendants See Part 2. 1.2.1.2.4.Pilihild, d.ca 1075; m.Ct Sieghard im Pongau 1.2.1.3.a dau., m.Ct Razo von Diessen (d.ca 1050) 1.3.Hermann, living 954 1.4.Berthold, Margrave in Bavaria, d.980; m.Heliksuinda, dau.of Ct Lothar von Walbeck 1.4.1.Heinrich, Margrave of Schweinfurt (950-1018); m.Gerberge, dau.of Ct Heribert im Kinziggau 1.4.1.1.Otto, Margrave of Schweinfurt, Duke of Swabia, d.1057; m.1036 Irmgard, dau.of Meginfred, Margrave of Susa 1.4.1.1.1.Eilika, Abbess of Niedermuenster 1.4.1.1.2.Judith, d.ca 1104; m.1st Duke Kuno of Bavaria; m.2d Ct Boto von Pottenstein 1.4.1.1.3.Beatrix, d.1104; m.Heinrich von Hildrizhausen, Margrave of the Nordgau 1.4.1.1.4.Gisela; m.Ct Berthold III von Andechs 1.4.1.1.5.Bertha; m.1st Ct Hermann von Kastl, Margrave of the Nordgau; m.2d Ct Friedrich von kastl 1.4.1.2.Heinrich I, Ct an der Pegnitz; m.a dau.of Ct Kuno 1.4.1.2.1.Ct Heinrich an der Pegnitz und von Weissenburg 1.4.1.2.2.Ct Otto von Scheyern; for his descendants See Part 4. 1.4.1.2.3.Kuno von Lechsgemuend; m.Mathilde, dau.of Ct Rudolf von Achalm 1.4.1.2.3.1.Heinrich I, k.a.1078; m.Irmgard, dau.of Ct Palatine Kuno von Rott 1.4.1.2.3.1.1.Heinrich II, d.1142; m.Liukard N 1.4.1.2.3.1.1.1.Volkrat, Ct von Lechsgemuend, d.1146; m.Liukard, dau.of Diepold von Vohburg 1.4.1.2.3.1.1.1.1.Dietpold, d.1192; m.Agathe von Teck 1.4.1.2.3.1.1.1.1.1.Ct Berthold von Graisbach 1.4.1.2.3.1.1.1.1.1.1.Heinrich V 1.4.1.2.3.1.1.1.1.1.2.Berthold II; m.Adelheid N 1.4.1.2.3.1.1.1.1.1.2.1.Berthold III, d.ca 1288; m.Elisabeth von Hirschberg 1.4.1.2.3.1.1.1.1.1.2.1.1.Berthold IV, d.ca 1327 1.4.1.2.3.1.1.1.1.1.2.1.1.1.Berthold V, d.ca 1329 1.4.1.2.3.1.1.1.1.1.2.1.1.2.Heinrich VII 1.4.1.2.3.1.1.1.1.1.2.1.2.Heinrich VI 1.4.1.2.3.1.1.1.1.1.2.1.3.Gebhard, Bp of Eichstaett, d.1327 1.4.1.2.3.1.1.1.1.1.2.1.4.Adelheid; m.Ct Ulrich von Helfenstein 1.4.1.2.3.1.1.1.1.1.2.1.5.Elisabeth; m.Albert III von Neiffen 1.4.1.2.3.1.1.1.1.1.2.2.Agnes; m.Berald von Wangen 1.4.1.2.3.1.1.1.2.Ct Heinrich IV von Leichsgemuend und Matrei; m.Wilibirg von Treffen 1.4.1.2.3.1.1.2.Ct Heinrich von Frontenhausen, d.1208; m.Adelheid von Plain 1.4.1.2.3.1.1.2.1.Otto III, d.ca 1883 1.4.1.2.3.1.1.2.2.Uta, d.1254; m.Ct Albert of Tyrol 1.4.1.2.3.1.1.2.3.Konrad, Bp of Regensburg, d.1226 1.4.1.2.3.1.1.2.4.Adelheid; m.Konrad, Burggrave of Nuernberg 1.4.1.2.3.1.1.3.Ct Konrad von Sulzau, d.ca 1182 1.4.1.2.3.1.2.Ct Otto von Harburg 1.4.1.2.3.1.3.Burkhard, Bp of Utrecht, d.1112 1.4.1.2.3.1.4.Kuno von Horburg, d.ca 1130 1.4.1.2.3.1.4.1.Kuno von Horburg 1.4.1.2.3.1.5.Adelheid, d.1111; m.1st Ct Markwart von Marquartstein; m.2d Ct Ulrich von Passau (d.1099); m.3d Ct Berengar von Sulzbach 1.4.1.2.3.1.6.Ct Bertold von Burgeck, d.ca 1123 1.4.1.2.3.1.6.1.Burkhard 1.4.1.2.3.1.6.2.Eilika; m.Ct Gerhard von Shauenburg 1.4.1.3.Burkhard, Bp of Halberstadt, d.1059 1.4.1.4.Eilika; m.Duke Bernhard of Saxoy 1.4.1.5.Judith, d.1058; m.1035 Duke Bretislav of Moravia 1.4.2.Burkhard 1.4.3.Otto 1.4.3.1.Hizila 1.4.4.Eilika, Abbess of Niedernburg 1.5.Luitpold, Margrave of the Ostmark; for his descendants See Part 3. 1.6.Ludwig 1.7.Judith (925-978) 2.Berthold, Duke of Carinthia and Bavaria, d.947; m.Biletrud N 2.1.Duke Heinrich III of Bavaria and Carinthia, d.989 2.2.Kunigunde; m.Ct Ulrich in Schweinachgau End of Part 1.
