When William Henry Harrison was 68 years old he was elected President and
became the oldest man to be inaugurated as President. His wife, Anna
Tuthill Symmes Harrison, was too ill to go to Washington so he asked the
widow of his son, William Henry Harrison, Jane Irwin Harrison to
accompany him as hostess until his wife could come to Washington. He
caught pneumonia during his inaugural address and died, one month after
the inauguaration, on April 4, 1841. Anna Harrison was packing when she
got the word of his death.
Mrs. Harrison lived for twenty more years. She stayed at her home in
North Bend until the Harrison home burned in 1858. At that time she went
to live nearby with her last surviving child, John Scott Harrison. She
