The S.S. RUGIA was built in 1882 by Vulkan shipbuilders in 
Stettin for the Hamburg American Line (HAPAG).  She was 358 
feet long by 43 feet wide, with a gross tonnage of 3,467.
She carried 96 first class, and 1,100 third class, passengers.  
She was sold in 1895 to the French Fabre Line, and renamed
the PATRIA.  She was sold again in 1902/3, and scrapped in

*The S.S. "Baltic" was built in 1850 by Brown & Bell, New York, 
for the Collins Line.  2,860 tons;  282 x 45 ft;  straight
bow, 1 funnel, 3 masts;  wood construction, paddle locomotion. 
16 November 1850 maiden voyage New York-Liverpool.  1853 mizen 
mast removed.  3 February 1858 last voyage New York-Liverpool.  
1858-1861 laid up.  1861 Civil War transport.  1866 ran for 
North American Lloyd.  1867 ran for New York & Bremen S.S. Co.  
"The one redeeming feature of the year's activities
[for the New York & Bremen S.S. Co.] was the penultimate 
westbound voyage of the "Baltic", which left Southampton with 
1,000 passengers, 230 of whom had embarked there and the 
remainder at Bremen".  The voyage apparently was not without 
incident, since some of the passengers complained of ill
treatment [Handelskammer Bremen, Archiv, II-A-I.4.Bd.4 Nr. 253 
und 255-257b].  Laid up from the autumn of 1867.  1870 engines 
removed.  1880 scrapped [N. R. P. Bonsor, "North Atlantic 
Seaway" (Prescot,Lancs.: Stephenson, 1955), pp. 57 and 240].
